Zoltar Attacks!
The game plays using a mouse and was developed in three days for SabbyJam 25.
Your cache is written as "number of missiles / number of cities" - so "7 / 6" indicates you have seven missiles to spare and six cities. Cities and missiles are replenished at the end of each level.
- Zoltar is based on Warspawn's floating eyebeast
- Jahazzar made the excellent sombre Talk To Me music used throughout the game (CC-BY-SA 3.0)
- pigeonfriend created the alien beeps
- Garuda1982 recorded the haunting explosions (these were actually just fireworks)
- Spring Spring created both next level chimes
- The font Audiowide is from Astigmatic (SIL OFL 1.1)
- And of course, I created City Protect based on the 1984 title by Robert P. Munafo
Post-jam a few changes:
- Click twice to reset at the end.
- Slightly easier difficulty
- Less buggy dialogue (more sounds last the full duration, less skipping)

The pacing/difficulty needs some love. It is very easy, and it doesn't really take up speed either.
I wonder if this is a WebKit/Safari issue. On my 2019 Mac, it's unberably slow in Safari and slow Safari rendering is something that also challenged me with Maelstrom. This game is worse as, being a game jam game, it has no frame skip protection.
I'm still losing most of my runs (variety of controllers not always mouse). None of the IRL Game Jam participants beat it either. So congrats on making it through.
City Protect was super slow - so half-way through building this one I slashed it from 26 levels to 12. Then I reduced the difficulty further with the first update as I found it too difficult. I feel Game Jam games tend to be like a sugar-rush treat - quick and easy - if people want a long run game they'll probably go for something else. Maybe one day I'll stumble upon a killer mechanic like Terranil. But this mechanic is not that - so I think it may have met its final form - possibly with a few minor tweaks in future.
